The Latest News from Acapulco, Mexico

Acapulco News

In the news:

Mexico on the verge of decriminalizing marijuana, cocaine, opium, and heroin possession. Yes, you read that right... read on.

Not so fast... Fox changes his mind under US "pressure" read here. Does the CIA have pictures of him wearing women's underwear or what? That was the fastest capitulation this side of the Pecos.

Acapulco has a number of newspapers that do good reporting of the local news with decent sections on state and national news and some light international offerings. One thing about the newspapers that is quite different from the papers back home is that that they don't pull any punches when it comes to splashing disturbing images across the front page. If someone gets run over and there is a photographer on the scene, the lifeless bashed in face will be seen by all of Acapulco the next day.

I read the paper everyday and it's full of interesting tidbits. For example, I was shocked to learn that a national study of all the gas stations in Mexico discovered that PEMEX on Univeritario and Chautemoc right here little old Acapulco was the MOST corrupt in the entire republic.

Another interesting thing about the paper is, despite the size of Acapulco, it seems no story is too small. On a slow news day, you might see a full-length feature about a guy that gets caught trying to steal a bag of Sabritos from a convenience store.

What the papers lack in hard hitting investigative journalism of powerful figures, they certainly make up for in entertaining true crime offerings. Acapulco has clearly not matured in terms of its journalistic analysis, but they do a fair job of reporting major event as they happen.

Acapulco Newspapers

The major newspapers include:

Novedades - One of Acapulco's main papers.

El Sol de Acapulco - The new source in Acapulco.

El Sur - covers the state of Guerreo.

Diario 17 - a comparatively smaller newpaper than Sol de Acapulco and Novedades, but a consistent publication.

Below are listing of interesting new articles about Acapulco, Guerrero, and Mexico of interest to residents and visitors...
