| Getting a Phone Line in Acapulco, Mexico |
Getting a Phone Line in Acapulco, MexicoIt's actually much easier than you'd expect. You pretty much just march down to the big Telmex office on the Costera, take a number, wait two hours, a nice lady helps you fill out the forms, you pay a $180 USD installation fee and in a lighting fast two weeks to one month later, you are the proud owner of what is undisputably the single biggest economic drag on the standard of living of the average Mexican - a Telmex telephone. I would hazard a guess and say that, in terms of the average houshold economy, having a Telmex telephone is about a big a drag on the family budget as having crack dispenser in the kitchen. But hey, once you get hooked, it's hard to stop and I can't live without it (telephone service that is).
But BEWARE!
Telmex is the single biggest economic drain on the Mexican economy and is likely to be the biggest drain on your personal economy as well.
Here's a list of my complaints as I get telephone bills in excess of $1,000 USD per month quite regularly though I never got a phone bill in the U.S. of more than $200 in my life. I guess this is why the owner of Telmex is the 4th richest man in the world. That's right WORLD, 4th as in 3 mutli-billionaires behind Bill Gates.
1) Ghost calls. These are calls not made by the owner of the line but expensive calls that mysteriously appear on one's bill each month. No matter what, Telmex won't take them off. It's also well known that many Telmex employees tap into other people's lines to make their calls. I get ghost calls on my bill every single month.
2) You have to pay to call a local cell phone. Since almost everyone in Acapulco uses a cell this really adds up.
3) No such thing as unlimited local calls. Wanna make a local call? You gotta pay.
4) For those most unfortunate folks that use dial up, each connection is a charge. Got booted becuase the lines are slow? Too bad, pay us.
5) There is ALWAYS static in the lines and even local calls regularly sound as if there were being made from a weather station in Antarctica.
6) Service is slooooow and you normally have to tip the serivce people to come and fix your line. And I'm not talking a couple bucks either.
