Gay places to stay, 2007-03-26

There are several places for gay travellers to stay in Acapulco: Casa Condesa, Villa Roqueta, and Las Palmas.
Iīve stayed at both Casa Condesa and Villa Roqueta, and found that Casa Condesa was hands-down the best for gay travellers.
Itīs a relaxed, centrally-located guesthouse, decorated in a delightly shabby chic or bohemian style, surrounded by several layers of dense tropical flora.
There are 8 different guest rooms and every one has a different style. My personal favourite was the palapa, a huge al fresco living space, swathed with brightly-dyed fabrics and a two-man hammock to take a siesta, and a quiet, enclosed bedroom area.
There is a swimming pool (you can swim nude if you wish) and all meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner, are served.
One striking thing about the place are the signs as you enter: Mi casa es su casa (my house is your house) and a rainbow-coloured sticker inside the lounge area simply saying Familia (family).
During my 8-day stay at Casa Condesa, I genuinely felt part of a family. James, the owner, originally from Oklahoma, ensures a warm welcome and his team of staff are friendly and attentive.
The location of Casa Condesa is second to none. All the other gay guesthouses in Acapulco are situated too far away from the gay beach, Betos Beach. However, Casa Condesa is only an 8- minute walk from this beach.
Add to that the throbbing nightlife (both gay and mixed) of the glittering Costera strip, the boutique clothes shop, and the tourist attractions of the clifftop divers, the tropical island of Isla Roqueta or the peaceful Lagunas de Tres Palos, and you have all the perfect ingredients for a satisfying gay holiday in Mexico.
I took a gay holiday to Cancun and Playa del Carmen on the Caribbean coast of Mexico, but overall, I found the Pacific coastal resort of Acapulco to be far more gay and much more interesting in terms of nightlife, scenery and things to do.
