Beginning in 1999, Mexico began changing it system around so that there would be a uniform 7 digit system. For example, when in Acapulco, a number like 744-123-4567 would be dialed as 123-456 if it is a local land line phone, 744-123-4567 if it is a local cell or if you were calling Acapulc long distance. Like all things in Mexico, the one exception is Mexico City where local calls now have eight digits (add a 5 city code before your target number).
