| Prostitution in Acapulco, Mexico |
Prostitution in Acapulco Prostitution is legal in Acapulco and semi-regulated by the municipal government. By semi-regulated, that means that the girls that work in the strip clubs are supposed to pass a health check regularly in order to work there.
However, there has been a great deal of corruption among the clubs as investigations by the city officials in 2004 turned up numerous under aged workers as well as a few girls that could not pass their health exams. Several clubs were shut down for a period of time by the city in order to send a message to the owners.
In Acapulco, there are five main outlets for prostitution: quintas (which are essentially brothels where the girls line up for clients and they chose the one they like), street hookers (who mainly congregate in the area between Baby Lobster's and Mangos on the La Costera starting around 10pm), stripers (most strippers in the strip clubs of Acapulco are prostitutes), escort services that advertise in the newspapers and telephone directories, and the old-school Mexican variety dance hall/brothel where the locals go to dance, drink and talk with the women mostly and to have sex occasionally while a band lazily frets away Latin classics in the background. These are found mainly in the zona roja (red zone).
Prostitution in Acapulco is by no means an all female sport. Many males moonlight as prostitutes for male clients. Some male bartenders in popular clubs are rumored to double as prostitutes for male clients and many are bi-sexual.
In addition, Acapulco has a growing transgender population who seem to have staked out their turf on the opposite side of the Costera from the female prostitutes across the street from Mangos. These Acapulco shemales I have to say often look more feminine and voluptuous than their female counterparts (sort of like the exaggerated female form one might see in Marvel Comics) so if this is not what you had in mind, I'd recommend steering clear of the street scene as I could easily see someone with their beer goggles on getting a big and unwelcome surprise in their hotel room.
That said, prostitution in Acapulco is far less intense than in other Latin American destinations such as Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, and Argentina where most dance clubs have been taken over by working girls and where prostitution is simply inescapable. In Acapulco, for the most part, prostitution remains relegated to the locations mentioned above and remains on the margins of the nightlife scene. I would speculate that the relatively strong Mexican economy and a stronger sense of traditional Catholic values (at least on the surface) have combined to moderate the surge in prostitution seen elsewhere in Latin America and the Caribbean, but that's just armchair sociology so who knows... maybe it's just the large number and immense popularity of strip clubs in Mexico generally and Acapulco especially.
