Cliff Divers of Acapulco, Mexico

Cliff Divers of Acapulco

Living with a balcony right above La Quebrada and with an increasing love of boating, I've seen the cliff divers perform more times now that I can count. Still, no matter how many times I see the dives, I'm impressed. Sometimes one is even privileged to something a little different like a swan dive with a full somersault, diving at night with torches, or tandem dives. I actually captured a rare four person dive while relaxing on a boat off-shore one day. If you look closely at the picture above, you can see that I also caught it on film (a rare find, sort of like getting the Loch-ness monster on film.)

Despite the cliff divers being probably the most recognizable symbol of Acapulco, I really didn't know much about them. I decided to talk to one fo the cliff divers and I learned a couple things.

Despite the fact that you only see for or five divers on a given night, there are dozens of them. They work in shifts primarily so that they don't injure themselves from the impact of the dive day after day.

They train to be cliff divers from a very young age, I guess someone doesn't just wake up one day and decide to be a cliff diver (except of course Elvis in the film Fun in Acapulco.)

I also learned it's dangerous. The divers much time the dive with the ocean current while diving where there are no rocks. Even the climb up is hazerdous. One false move and they can go tumbling down the side of the mountain.
