| Pharmacies in Acapulco, Mexico |
Pharmacies in AcapulcoMexican Pharmacies deserve their own page because they are pretty different than their American counterparts and really raise a good counter-point to the way things ought to be.
Pharmacies represent one of the things that I like best about Acapulco and Mexico in general - the freedom. They don’t treat you like a big baby. If you want to go in a buy penicillin and a needle and give yourself a shot… well, not a problem. In fact a sizable percentage of drugs and other treatments that in the U.S. require a needless and costly trip to the doctor just so he or she can see you for three minutes and write you a prescription can be purchased over the counter in Mexico.
Take Viagra for example...
Viagra, Cialis, and other assorted male performance enhancers are available over the counter throughout Mexico, and Acapulco is no exception. In order to get them your don’t even have to come up with a lame excuse, you just walk right in and announce to the room that your experiencing erectile dysfunction and require 100mgs of Viagra for the evening because you've got a big date. Well, actually you don't need to do that. It’s all pretty casual and no explanations are needed. It’s about as difficult as marching into the pharmacy and buying Sudafed.
The pharmacies in Acapulco are pretty representative of Mexico, still not all stereotypes apply. They are a bit stricter than their wayward cousins up along the northern boarder which will sell you almost anything. The boarder town pharmacies are famous up in Texas for being a quick and easy supply of such favorites as Valium, Zanex, and Rohypnol (the dreaded "date rape drug"). This isn't really true of Acapulco. Well, I suppose you get them easy enough since Mexican doctors don't have any hang ups about prescribing you something you legitimately need (or really want) just because some people like to use it recreationally. Still, what you won't find is an organized pill pushing industry like, for example, up in Nuevo Laredo where you have guys coming up to you asking, "hey amigo, you looking for a prescription?" the moment you cross the border.
Another great aspect of Mexican pharmacies is that the same drugs you pay extortion sized money for up in the U.S. can be purchased for much less here. It really makes you realize what a racket we've got going up in the U.S. I haven't had formal health insurance since I since I turned 18 (way back in 1988) so for someone in my situation, Mexico is really a healthy change, pardon the pun.
