El Zócalo - Central Plaza Acapulco

El Zócalo

Acapulco's Town Square El Zóalo is Acapulco's old town square or central plaza. While once an important part of Acapulco's city life, today the Zóalo would best be described as a sleepy little park with some pleasant stone benches, fountains, a large stone gazebo, and Acapulco's large Catholic Cathedral. The Zocalo also has a few cafes, restaurants, a few shops, a budget hotel, and even an ice cream shop. It's as close to the traditional Mexico or the European cafe scene as Acapulco gets. I find it a great place to relax and read the paper a book or just people watch. There are also number shoe-shine stands here. I think when I'm 70, if my liver makes it that far after all the nightlife temptations, this will be the place to come feed the pigeons a la New York's central park.

Just behind the Cathedral you'll find Acapulco's oldest neighborhoods where the wealthy traders made their homes. There are also some jewelry and other stores nearby and one can easily walk to other tourist attractions such as Acapulco's traditional market, the Malecón, La Quebrada, and the Marina from here. The are also some traditional Mexican restaurants and a sizable selection of budget hotels within a few block radius. If you're pressed for time, you could easily walk through and soak it in in a few minutes time.
