Semana Santa in Acapulco, Mexico

Semana Santa in Acapulco, Mexico

Semana Santa is the last week of Lent and run through Good Friday and easter Sunday. In Acapulco, it's the week of the living Chilango. Chilango is a term on the order of Gringo that Mexicans use to describe folks form Mexico City - one of the world's largest cities with some 20 million people that seems to empty into Acapulco once a year. In Acapulco anyway, Semana Santa is best described the week-long Mexican equivalent of Spring Break. Imagine instead of Tommy and Joe from Arizona State, Acapulco fills with Javier and Chuco from UNAM. Ok, not as many topless blond girls kissing, but I'd say even more heavy tequila drinking.

Semana Santa is supposed to be a religious holiday, but you'd sure never know it by taking a look at Acapulco.
