| Parque Papagayo in Acapulco, Mexico |
Papagayo ParkNew York has it's Central Park, San Francisco has
Golden Gate Park, and Acapulco has it's Parque Papagayo. Parque Papagayo is
Acapulco's big stretch of green that runs between La Costera and Ave. Chautemoc
right before you enter the Golden Zone (that is the tourist area big hotels) and
right across from Hornos beach. Just look fo thehuge Mexican flag by the beach
and you'll know right where to find the main entrance to the park. If a had to
describe the park in one word, that word would be retro. But unlike in U.S.
which went through the 80s and 90s before redisovering the 1970s, Parque
Papagayo seems to have stood it's ground stubbornly refusing to change with the
times. Roller Skting rinks, carvival-style rides, skateboarding, and of corse
the coup de grace, the giant Pinata fountain which looks like a giant jack
painted in retro looking stripes Frank Stella style (you may not know the artist
but if you were born before 1970 you'll recognize the style).
Parque Papagayo is a great place for a stroll and it has some pleasant
activities including paddle boats, lots of places to buy foods, candy, and arts
and crafts and even a big (replica) of a pirate ship. It's also a nice place to
go walking with your swetheart and watch all the people. It also has a big
soccor field where you can catch a game. Generall access to the park closes when
it gets dark. There used to be a big tunnel in front of the park, before
Huricane Pauline struck filling up the tunel with artisans on top. with water
and trapping people inside.
