Cell Phones

Cell Phone in Acapulco, Mexico

Cell phones are a great option if you need to communicate while in town and everyone wants to do their own thing.  Relative to buying phone cards and looking for a pay phone, if not reasonably priced, then at least they are much more convenient.  You can buy throw away cell phone for little more than the price of the phone card at local convenience stores like Oxxo. You buy the phone, use it while here, then throw it away when you go. You can get a cell with $50 worth of credit for about $65 USD. The main advantage of this over payphone is that you can give out your number while you're here and can receive local calls, even if you run out of credit.

That's the good news. The bad news is that cell phone reception is often bad, they always seem to break, and mine always has an annoying  mailbox that likes to call me every 3 mintues to let me know I have a message.  Also, if you don't feed the monster regularly with phone cards, they'll cut off your service and you'll have to go to the office and pay a reistatment fee. I have a small box of disgarded cell phones that is starting to resemble a cell phone graveyard.

Though pretty convenient while on vacation, I really find cells sort of annoying and not a good use of resources.

If you're staying longer than a few months, I'd highly recomend marching down to Telmex and getting regular phone service (which is still expensive as all hell), but not nearly so much as cell phones.

Cell brands in Acapulco include Telcel, Unifon, y Iusacell. Telcel has the best reception, but is the most expensive. It's also by far the most popular and you can buy Telcel phone card almost anywhere.  Unfon is cheaper, but the range and reception are pretty limited. And Iusacell, expensive and has iffy service. Really, when it comes to choosing cell phone service in Acapulco, the choice is not much better than having to choose between a doo-doo souffle and a doo-doo fondue.

You can get Nextel here too, but they are  pricey.
