The Elcano, built in 1958 and remodeled in 1991, is located right on Icacos beach in the heart of the Golden Zone close to much of Acapulco's famous nightlife, shopping, and restaurants. Many, incorrectly, spell it "El Cano", the hotel was named after sailor SebastiƔn Elcano who was the first sailor to sail around the world (completing the voyage of Magellan who died in the Philippines).
This dignified nine floor, 180 suite hotel features ocean views, a private terrace (except in studio suites), air conditioning and ceiling fans, cable/satellite TV, telephone, message service, room service, mini-bar, safe, and more of the more usual amenities. It's rooms are decorated with attractive furniture and a good selection of original art.
The Elcano Hotel has had some of the best food in Acapulco for over 40 years. I've dinned at their El Faro restaurant and met the chef (who surprised me by taking care of the check). It was a great experience. It also features Bambuco restaurant as well as three bars, El Timor Lobby Bar, El Faro Bar, and Bambuco Bar.
This is my vote for the best hotel in the Golden Zone, but the "best" hotel (like beauty) is in the eye of the beholder and there surely are other good candidates within walking distance.
