The State of Guerrero, Mexico

Guerrero, Mexico

Guerrero, Mexico
Guerrero first became a state on October 27, 1849. Guerrero comprises 64,281 km² and has about 3 million people. The state capital of Guerrero is Chilpancingo - most people know this it only because they drove through on a trip between Acapulco and Mexico City. Guerrero is known as one of Mexico's poorest states with an economy based mainly on small scale agriculture and tourism. The Triangle of the Sun, Triángulo del Sol in Spanish, are the three cities that make up Guerrero's tourist economy. Taxco, which is a small colonial town built into the mountains, Ixtapa & Zihuatanejo, which are smallish tourist resorts on the Pacific and of course, the world famous Acapulco. Iguala is also worth mentioning, it's small, poor, traditional Mexican town.

Politically, it's dominated by the PRD in the cities and the PRI in the countryside. PAN, the party of president Vicente Fox (2000-2006), Mexico's version of America's GOP, scores so little support in Guerrero it's hardly worth mentioning. Guerrero is divided into 76 municipalities.

Guerrero is known for its hand carved masks, sea turtles, beaches, and history of backward politics. Located in the Tropic of Cancer, it's also known for the occasional cyclone (Pacific hurricane or typhoon). It also has a bit of seismic activity. Here in Acapulco, Guerrero is basically divided into two - the Costa Grande (north of Acapulco) and Costa Chica (south of Acapulco).
