Acapulco Fashion Week

Once each year around the end of April or the beginning of May, Acapulco plays
host to the cream of Mexican clothes designers and a few select foreigners in
a display of clothing which is certainly far better than one might expect. In
2005 they had the dubious honour of Naomi Campbell as the star of the show. It
started very late, she got in a huff and escaped to the bathroom and only displayed
herself on the catwalk for just long enough to justify her exorbitant fee. It
was not a total success from an organizational point of view.
2006 was a completely different matter. Although some of the earlier events -
the usual eternal inauguration speeches and a spirited game of football (soccer)
on the beach kicked off lamentably late, the fashion show itself was as slick
as anything you might see in Paris. This year the guests were from South Africa
and the "star" was a Brazilian model who while undoubtedly beautiful is hardly
a household name.
With about 15 designers showing their wares and perhaps 30 models showing theirs it cannot have been the easiest task. Add to that the fact that Televisa was one of the sponsors, the parade was covered by several TV shows including E Entertainment TV and 50 or so members of the press with attendant photographers (yours truly included). I take my hat off to the charming and diplomatic organizer-in-chief for a job well executed.
We were treated to a spectacular opening from South Africa with acrobats and men
in life size giraffe and rhinoceros suits followed by a fast moving fashion show
with none of the long gaps between designers or indeed models that one might have
expected. I will allow my photos to say the rest.
