| Internet Service in Acapulco, Mexico |
The Internet in AcapulcoThe Internet, a subject close to my heart. The
internet is booming around the globe and Acapulco is no exception. If it weren't
for the internet I wouldn't be living and working in Acapulco today. When I
first traveled to Mexico in 1998, the Internet was just starting to take off.
Today it's everywhere. For most tourists, you'll have no trouble sending your
emails, surfing the web, or even making low cost phone calls.
If you
don't have a connection at your hotel (many of the better hotels have internet)
there are internet cafes o'plenty. On the major streets as well as
tucked into back alleys, it seems just about every neighborhood has an Internet
cafe these days where the girls chat and the guys try to sneak looks at the
nudie sites when they think no one is watching.
As a tourist, you'll
probably be best off exploring the the hotel area. The cost of using the
Internet varies widely. In the small back alley places, the price may be just 50
cents per hour while in the the tourist areas it may be several dollars or more
per hour. Connection speeds vary widely also however so you may be better off at
a high priced place with a lightning fast connection than a backwater
establishment that has a ton of computers jimmy rigged to a single connection
and moves at the speed of molasses.
One issue that may be relevant for
those that bring their own laptops is that many Internet cafes are hooked up to
a central computer that monitors your time so you may not be able to plug your
laptop in. At others, this will be no problem. In some locations your wireless
connections will work but in most places, you'll need to hook up with an
ethernet cable.
When my line goes down, I go to the Grand Plaza to the
place right next to VIPS to plug in. For those of you staying for a while, I
can't stress the benefits of an Internet connection. Not only for emails, but
for long distance calls. I use a service called DialPad and make hours of calls
almost everyday dirt cheap.
