| Fuerte de San Diego Acapulco |
Fort San Diego I think Fort San Diego called Fuerte de San Diego in Spanish (fuerte
being the Spanish word for both "fort" and "strong") is both overrated and
underrated at the same time. It's overrated because it receives a lot of play in
tourist guides but in the grand scheme of things its not that grand. Don't get
me wrong, it's pretty interesting, but not for more than an hour or so. It's
underrated because I do think with a bit of effort it cold be a first class
tourist attraction, especially if they opened it up at night for special events
which would be in short, awesome.
As far as tourist attractions go, it's
cool so see the old fort and imagine what life must have been for the first
settlers in Acapulco and the old pirates. Also, some rumors are dispelled, for
example the original fort was destroyed in an earthquake in 1776 and not rebuilt
until 1783. Still, Fuerte de Acapulco pales in comparison to what other Mexican
cities have to offer. For colonial era sights, Mexico City and Taxco are not too far away and infinitely more interesting.
Fuerte de San Diego does have a few interesting exhibits, houses the Acapulco
Museum of History, and the best book store in Acapulco (which consists of only a
few rows of books... but good ones). The part I enjoyed the most was going up on
top of the fort where the canons are perched and looking out onto the ocean and
the city that has grown up around the old fortress. These early settlers had no
idea that one day Acapulco would evolve into the Hollywood of Mexico.
If
you like pirates and reminiscing about the past, Fort San Diego is sure worth a
visit. There is nothing earth shattering about it, and I wouldn't plan your day
around it, but it's a good way to pass a couple hours and to get a sense of
where Acapulco came from and its commercial history (complete with pirates) in
between the beaches and the bars.
