If you are a fan of old-fashioned cantinas, El Refugio will be a pleasure. It combines that tradition with a new concept, to offer a whole array of delicious snacks and Mexican dishes that will delight the most demanding guest. Add to this a full and hospitable bar, and the combination is unbeatable. Here you can experience some unforgettable moments of fun in a party atmosphere that only El Refugio is able to create. The decor is colonial, with lots of historic details like the colored glass bottles and rustic wooden chairs and tables, covered with festive cantina table cloths. The bar itself is a great piece of workmanship. There is no cover charge. The dress is casual, and the clientele ranges from twenties to forties or older. Each day there is a different special. On Thursdays, of course, it is Pozole, with mariachis from 2 pm on. From Monday through Saturday the kitchen operates from noon to midnight. On Sundays, El Refugio opens at 10 am with breakfast (chilaques or eggs or pancakes) for those nursing a hangover. Or not. Look for El Refugio on the bay side of the Costera, at the traffic circle of the Convention Center.
